What is SDG 12 and How Your Wardrobe Can Make a Difference
Every day, millions of people around the world get dressed without giving much thought to the journey their clothes took to reach them. But what if your wardrobe could be one of the most powerful tools you have to help build a better, more sustainable world? That's exactly what Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) — and Planet Re-imagined — are all about.
What is SDG 12?
SDG 12 is one of the 17 Global Goals established by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its focus is on ensuring Sustainable Production and Consumption — in other words, doing more and better with less.
The fashion industry is one of the world's most resource-intensive sectors. It accounts for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, consumes enormous quantities of water, and generates millions of tonnes of textile waste every year. Fast fashion — the model of producing cheap, disposable clothing at high volumes — is a major driver of these problems.
SDG 12 calls on businesses, governments, and individuals to rethink how we produce and consume goods, including the clothes we wear.
The Core Principles Behind SDG 12
At Planet Re-imagined, we have built our entire business model around three core principles of sustainable consumption:
1. Decoupling Economic Growth from Environmental and Social Harm
Traditional economic models assume that growth requires more resources and more waste. SDG 12 challenges this assumption. We believe — and prove — that it is possible to grow a business while reducing our environmental and social footprints. By using organic and recycled materials and partnering with ethical suppliers, we show that profitability and responsibility can coexist.
2. Life Cycle Perspective
Every garment has a life — from the farming of raw materials, to manufacturing, to the moment it ends up in a landfill. A life cycle perspective means considering the full environmental and social impacts of a product at every stage. At Planet Re-imagined, we design for durability and quality, so our clothes last longer and generate less waste.
3. Circular Economy
A circular economy keeps resources in use for as long as possible. Rather than the traditional "take-make-dispose" model, we encourage our customers to care for their garments, repair rather than replace, and make mindful purchasing decisions. Every piece you buy from us is an investment in quality that is meant to last — and we support you along the way with educational tips on sustainable living, garment care, repair, and reuse.
How Your Wardrobe Can Make a Difference
You don't need to overhaul your entire closet overnight. Here are a few simple ways your clothing choices can contribute to SDG 12:
- Choose quality over quantity — Buy fewer, better pieces that last longer.
- Support sustainable brands — Look for certifications like organic cotton, recycled materials, and ethical production.
- Care for your clothes — Wash at lower temperatures, air dry, and repair when possible.
- Think before you buy — Ask yourself: do I really need this? Will I wear it at least 30 times?
Why Planet Re-imagined?
At Planet Re-imagined, every product we sell is a deliberate step toward SDG 12. We use eco-friendly, organic, and recycled materials, partner with suppliers who share our values, and operate on a Print-on-Demand (POD) model — meaning we only produce what is ordered, eliminating overproduction and unsold stock entirely.
Our Production Partners
Our sustainability commitments are only as strong as the partners we work with. That's why we have carefully selected two of the most sustainability-focused production partners in the industry — Printful and Teemill — both of whom share our values and back their claims with independently verified certifications.
Printful fulfils our products using industry-leading sustainable practices:
- Printing is done using Kornit printers that generate almost zero wastewater and use less energy than standard industry printers
- All inks are Oeko-Tex™ certified, vegan, water-based, and free of harmful chemicals
- Embroidery is done with 100% recycled polyester threads, also Oeko-Tex™ certified and safe for both adult and children's clothing
- Organic products are verified with GOTS or OCS certificates; recycled products with GRS or RCS certificates
- All apparel is packed in post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic mailers with a minimum of 70% PCR content. Download Printful's Sustainability Commitment (PDF)
Teemill operates on a fully circular model, participating in the following industry-leading certification programs:
